As most of you know by now we've had a security breach on BarterMyFunds yesterday. The attacker managed to somehow trick our database into believing that it was receiving transactions and our system "responded" by sending it its bartered return. Once we found out that we were being drained, all of our BMF-related accounts were already empty. Total damage: $8700 We then had $40 in our payment processors left and surprisingly he kept attacking us for over 1 and a half hours to get those $40 as well. We "fought him off manually" while trying to find the exact loophole that he found. Sadly we haven't been able to find the exact source as of now. We've implemented a number of patches to prevent further abuse, but as we're not sure what the exact way of entering was, I've decided that the most logical thing to do is keep our balances for automatic transfers very low as of now while putting up a button/notice on the website that informs people that we do bigger transactions manually for the time being. Sadly, this will add fees on our end which we'll have to calculate into the transaction, which is gonna make it that much more difficult to remain competitive. I instantly went to Okpay to see if we could at least get the money back that he stole there, the reply I got was the following: OKPAY Support Hello, thank you for contacting OKPAY Support! It is not possible to retrieve already sent payment in OKPAY as e-currency is non-reversible (see paragraphs 2.4 and 2.4.1 of the Terms of Service https://www.okpay.com/en/company/agreements/terms-of-service/). This account has been blocked and unfortunately there is no funds on the balance. Sincerely yours, OKPAY Team So they did block his account, but the money was already gone/can't be reverted. But by looking into Okpay I got a 2nd email and his full name (But who knows, these guys are very tactical so it might be connected to fake documents) While all of his emails were russian, the IP that he used was dutch, so that led us to nothing either. Furthermore he used 3 different PM accounts, a number of different bitcoin wallets and all of the cash is nowhere to be seen anymore. Both Alex and I tried to contact him through email, but none of us got a response. Here's the email that I wrote, keep in mind that in these cases you're empty handed and you try to play as tactical as possible: Hello, My name is Marc de Koning, CEO of BarterMyFunds among a few other companies (crowdfunded companies I have to add). Tonight you pulled off a stunt by exposing a vulnerability in all of our wallets and you successfully stole $8700 of our funds. Please explain me your reasoning for this. We are a crowdfunded company like I already mentioned, those funds are part of profits that are shared in full to our investors. You're not harming just us as a company but many people, regular people who are trying to collectively build a company on the internet that benefits them for the long term. Now, i'm not the worst guy to deal with. We often offer jobs to people who successfully expose loopholes in our system. Which is exactly what i'd like to discuss with you now. Please get back to me, I was gonna expose his name and info, but I decided that after all this time building up my image I better not do anything debatable that might harm it. -- The following is a personal note: This surely did cause me some damage, in a few ways. I now have to make a number of very tough decisions and that money was needed for a number of purposes. It's also very hard to deal with these things over and over again when you see a light at the end of the tunnel. However, after about 3 hours of feeling "unpleased" I decided to not let this get the best of me. I was SO excited yesterday when we exactly made our target for the bills on that day, after digging through our backed up bills since the reset. This has been something that I was looking forward to and really aiming for. Just 2 hours before the security breach I was very happy after calculating the daily results, ppmg etc to see that we made our target.. Every aspect of our business is improving. -Paidverts picked up (pure advertising+ upgrades) -The Paidverts forum really adds value to our community -PPMG picked up -And all of our bills during this month will be considerably lower due to the holidays+ a cut in the Amazon bill. So I kept in mind that this would lead to excess money at the end of the following month which I had 3 very good purposes for: -Payment for the legalisation -Upfront payment for the Amazon servers (To further cut our costs) -A buffer for December I'm not saying this is gonna be impossible due to the security breach, as we are definitely improving a lot, but I just don't see PPMG adding an extra ~$8k during the next month. However.. This has lead me to the following point.. And this is MY decision. Andraz, Carlos nor any other member of our team has got anything to do with this decision and i'm the only one to blame/aim your dissatisfaction at. -- Dividends. It seems that none of the decisions at hand are perfect ones. But taking into consideration that most of our crowd's members show that they would fully understand + the improved financial outcome for the company.. I've decided not to pay dividends. I could pay dividends and please those that are here for monetary reasons in the first place and put the business second or were really in need of the dividends to occur, which I totally understand. But.. It would make it so much harder for our business to start the new month off with an even bigger illiquidity, which is just not how you should run a business in my opinion, nor have I ever made such a bad financial decision before (Just my opinion). Perhaps a few disgruntled members will dump their Royalty Positions because of this decision, which I understand. I just hope that the long term members, the ones that put the company before their own gains will snap those Rp's up and show that My Traffic Value and its community are confident about this decision and its future. I also hope to get some support from you when people show up on the forum and treat the management in a disrespectful way. We're feeling the pain as well, we really do.
